学習目標 |
This course is centered on the close reading and analysis of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey (1818). Particular attention will be paid to the novel's “self-reflexive” elements; the narrator's observations on writing and reading. Their later development will also be considered. |
授業概要 |
We will first examine Austen's early writings and then discuss Northanger Abbey as a parody of Gothic romance. We will see how the novel grew out of a mere parody to establish itself as a new type of fiction. The class will be conducted in English. |
